Your module result is determined from your performance in both continuous assessment and the examinable component. To guarantee a pass grade for the module you must pass both of these: when all the calculations have been done, you must achieve a score of at least 40 for your overall continuous assessment and at least 40 for your examinable component. You must also pass any threshold your module sets (see ‘Thresholds’ in Section 4.4). Your result is not determined by an averaging of the two components.
Results are determined from the (weighted) average of all the summatively assessed work, at least one part of which will be available for scrutiny by the Examination and Assessment Board at their awarding meeting. Some modules may require a minimum score in excess of 40. If this applies to you it will be explained in your module-specific material.
On some modules students who fail can be allowed to resubmit part of the assessment (usually the final assignment). To enable our systems to handle such modules, values for two components, OCAS (overall continuous assessment score) and OES (overall examinable component score) are calculated for each student to allow us to check for eligibility to resubmit. While these values will be quoted when we issue module results, apart from this check, module results will be based on the overall weighted average score, as if the assessment only had one component.

If no substitution has taken place, the preliminary and final overall continuous assessment scores will be the same.
