back to topThe location

The Dome

The Brighton Dome is adjacent to the Brighton Pavilion and is part of a series of buildings that have been used as an entertainment centre since the late 1800s.

The Brighton Dome, the Corn Exchange and the Pavilion Theatre have been part of a large refurbishment project completed in 2002. The Dome was originally built as stables for the Prince of Wales in 1805 and converted into a concert hall in 1867. The refurbished buildings retain many of the original features as well as being a spacious and comfortable venue with modern theatre facilities.

By car

We strongly recommend travel by public transport. Central Brighton is very busy on a Saturday and parking can be difficult.

Parking

There is a 'Park and Ride' scheme although the first bus does not operate until 9.00. The car parks are well signed on the main roads in Brighton. Further information regarding parking can be obtained from the Parking Information Centre (Telephone: 01273 293 225, website: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/parking). Please be advised that the NCP car park in Church Street is expensive.

By train

Brighton Dome is a 10 minute walk from Brighton station. There are frequent fast connections from London Victoria, Kings Cross and the north by Thameslink. There are also regular services along the south coast. For full details on rail travel to and from Brighton call National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50.

By bus or coach

National Express’s express shuttle provides 18 daily departures between Brighton and London and runs a network of coach services nationally. For full details contact National Express on 08717 818181. For Brighton’s local bus services contact 01273 886200.

By air

Gatwick Airport is only 28 miles away with good connections by train, bus and road. Fast coach routes link Gatwick and Heathrow airports, and regular rail services connect both airports with London and Brighton.

Arrival and registration

The Dome is in the centre of a busy city, so please allow plenty of time for finding the venue, registration, robing and photography. Graduates and guests should enter through the Dome entrance in Church Street and make their way to the registration area. Here you will be given your presentation card which you must retain as it will be required when you go up onto the platform. You will also be given your seat tickets. When you have registered you will be directed through the Dome foyer to robing and photography.

Robing

Robing will take place in the Corn Exchange.

Details of gowns can be found under Helpful info.

The ceremony

Doors to the concert hall will open one hour before the ceremony. Marshals will show graduates to their reserved seats. Guests may choose their seats in any unreserved section on the ground floor or in the balcony. The ceremony will begin at 11.00 with the entrance of the procession. The ceremony is expected to finish by 12.30.

Pronunciation

If your name has an unusual pronunciation that you would like to clarify for your on-stage presentation, please telephone Lynne Thurston on 01342 327821 as soon as possible to ensure that the Graduate Presenter pronounces your name correctly.

Photography

The photographers will be available in the Pavilion Theatre from 08.30.

Details of the service provided by Ede and Ravenscroft Photography Ltd can be found under Helpful info.

Refreshments

Light refreshments will be available for you to purchase in the Corn Exchange and the Dome Foyer from 9.00 onwards. There are numerous restaurants, cafes and bars in the immediate vicinity.

Access

The Brighton Dome Concert Hall, Corn Exchange and Pavilion Theatre are fully accessible to people with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users. The entrances to all three venues are non-stepped and lifts can be used to access all public areas.

In the Dome Concert Hall wheelchair positions are available in both the stalls and circle areas and there is wheelchair access to the stage. Disabled toilets are provided on both levels and the Pavilion Theatre and Corn Exchange also have designated toilets.

If you or any of your guests require aisle seats or other special arrangements and have not already been contacted by a member of regional staff, please contact Lynne Thurston on 01342 327821. This is essential if you or one of your guests will be attending in a wheelchair, as fire regulations permit only a limited number in the building.

There is a Sennheiser infra-red assisted hearing system in the Dome Concert Hall and induction loops in both the Pavilion Theatre and the Corn Exchange. To make use of the Sennheiser system you should collect a receiver from the Open University's Welcome Team in the Dome Foyer where staff will explain how to use it. You should check before the day that your hearing aid is compatible with this system as there is no induction loop available.

Cloakroom

Graduates and their guests may leave their coats in the cloakroom in the Dome foyer. Although the cloakroom will be attended you are advised not to leave items of value. Pushchairs and buggies should also be left here as, due to Health and Safety regulations, they are not allowed in the auditorium.

First aid

Two St John Ambulance staff will be available on site.

Children

The Dome has theatre style seating and seats have to be allocated to children over four (this will take up a guest place allocation). Children under four may share a seat with an adult.

Although children are welcome at the ceremony, it may be unsuitable for very young children who may disturb the ceremony for others. Please note that children cannot sit with graduates during the ceremony.

Creche

There are no crèche facilities at the Dome.
