Student reviews

Firstly, I really enjoyed this module, and found it very interesting. It covers a fairly short time period compared to other modules I have completed. However, it covers a huge amount of history!

It is packed and moves at a fast pace it covers World War 1 and 2 and the Cold War. It also has 5 tutor-marked assignments and an end-of-module assessment, some of which are close together and with a fairly big word count. I found the end of the module all a bit frantic and I would not recommend trying to complete 2 modules at the same time if you choose this as one of them.

I would definitely recommend this module to anyone interested in modern history as I found it helped me see how we came to be where we are today politically and technologically.

This was my first OU level 3 module and I did find it was quite big step up from OU level 2.

A challenging gallop through the 20th century from the origins of WW1 to the fall of communism in Europe. Covering quite diverse aspects of political, military, economic and social history. The pace of the module is relentless. Demanding a high level of application not only on course material provided but wider research of academic material and primary sources. A rewarding opportunity for anyone interested in modern history that helps explain many of the issues of today. I found the guidance and advice from the online tutorials particularly helpful. It's probably worth attending at least two per assignment to gain different perspectives. I am sure it helped me to gain a sought-after distinction. Small margins!

This is a fascinating module for anyone interested in 20th century European history. It covers a lot of ground from the First World War right through to the fall of Communism and it covers the ground quickly. There's a lot of reading and you will need to be prepared to research independent sources, but it was interesting all the way through and I felt that I learned a lot.
