I enjoyed this course. I was not looking forward to having to be involved with online tutorials, but I was really surprised how the technology worked to allow for these to be so successful. I enjoyed the process of taking part in the online tutorials and didn't miss not having the face-to-face tutorials.

Be prepared to have to read a lot of text from the screen. If you prefer to read from paper, you are expected to have to print the materials out for yourself. I phoned up and asked if a printed version was available, but was told this was only for disabled students. So I was not very impressed that for such a highly priced course I was supplied with hardly any paper study materials, as it's mostly online reading.

Despite these admin niggles, my tutor was excellent and so helpful, she really did make the course enjoyable for me. It was a good start to my Masters in Education.

Faculty response

In response to student requests, print-on-demand is being made available for the 2014 presentation, to enable students to buy printed copies of the online material from a third-party supplier. For most students, this will be more cost-effective than printing out themselves.

Disabled students are supplied with a printed version of the materials only if their disability would otherwise prevent them from studying the module.

Faculty comment: "The survey shows that the majority of students consider that they were enabled to meet the learning outcomes and were satisfied with the support given to achieve this. A lower proportion of students 'enjoyed' the module. Being the first module in the qualification, this module introduces students to new concepts and ways of thinking which are critically important for further study at masters level. This can cause dissonance before students have appreciated the application of the work in their future studies."
