Student reviews

A brilliant course to finish my German degree with. No doubt about it, it is a hard course, however with the right amount of effort you can get a lot from it. I like the mixture of speaking and writing, and am satisfied with the result I obtained.

I found this a great course. Well worth the effort (which was considerable!). The materials are superbly well put together, as I have come to expect from the OU, and the feedback from my tutor was detailed, encouraging and helpful.

Online tutorials can be frustrating but are worth doing so that you have plenty of practice using Elluminate before the aural exam. They were useful for me too because I usually work on Saturdays and so only managed 2 of the face-to-face tutorials. I had long journeys to get to them but they were excellent.

While you are waiting to start the course I would recommend learning how to set your computer up so that the keyboard works as a German one, ie with the umlauts etc., and practice typing that way. (Don't forget also to download a picture of the German keyboard layout, which will save you a lot of hunting about).

Now that I've finished the course I've downloaded the online content as pdf and audio files so that I can revisit it at a more leisurely pace. There is such a lot of good stuff in there - hard to do it justice when you're under pressure of time.

Module satisfaction survey

The figures below are taken from a survey of students who sat the exam/completed the end-of-module assessment for the October 2016 presentation of L313. The survey was carried out in 2017.

36 students (a response rate of 40.9%) responded to the survey covering what they thought of 10 aspects of the module.

Please note that if the percentage of students who responded to this module survey is below 30% and/or the number of responses is below 23 it means that only a small proportion of students provided feedback and their views as shown here may not be fully representative of all students who studied the module.

See this page for the full text of questions and more information about the survey.

Faculty comment: "Approximately two-thirds of respondents value all aspects of the module, especially the tutor and student adviser support. It appears that the module continues to inspire and teach German language and culture at graduate level. The learning outcomes seem clear and most respondents are able to keep up with the workload, a considerable achievement at this level and increasingly in the context of another module studied at the same time. Long-term changes, such as implementation of a new online tutorial software, are on track but will take longer to show the desired positive impact students experience."
