Student reviews

A really well-presented course with excellent motivation and support offered by the authors.

This course was just a fill-in for me because it was my last-but-one year and I knew that I was going to do a maths course to finish in 2016.
I therefore faced it thinking I just had to grit my teeth and get through it.

How wrong I was! This is such an important, exciting and challenging course. I had taken TU100 My Digital Life earlier which was very enjoyable. I realised though that, without knowing how we are going to provide the energy for computing, our reliance on computer technology is going to be difficult, so this course helped me both:
• learn about all the energy options,
• form an opinion about the sticky problem of the 'how' and 'where' of energy production.
I thoroughly enjoyed all the learning involved!

I'm glad I did this module as it hugely increased my knowledge and understanding of the various energy sources, their technologies and associated problems. I personally found it something of a tough ride, but so relevant to anyone taking an environmental degree that I would recommend it on that basis alone.

It felt at times that it was only an Energy module which, although it did clearly set out all the problems (pollutants etc) resulting from our current energy sources and thus the factors we need to be able to eliminate or ameliorate, had the Sustainability aspect slightly tacked on at the end.

Without a physics/engineering/maths background I felt at something of a disadvantage and put in a considerable amount of extra work to master the required energy calculations (but this is a personal weakness, the maths is not difficult). There was a lot of energy history in this module, and given that the assignments focussed on current energy scenarios and the module was entitled 'Energy and Sustainability', to me the history bits seemed superfluous but that may be a reflection of the fact I took the module from an environmental background not a physics or engineering one.

My tutor was hugely supportive and this year the exam had a choice of questions which meant I could target my revision and ultimately I received a very satisfactory grade.

Module satisfaction survey

The figures below are taken from a survey of students who sat the exam/completed the end-of-module assessment for the October 2016 presentation of T213. The survey was carried out in 2017.

77 students (a response rate of 22.6%) responded to the survey covering what they thought of 10 aspects of the module.

Please note that if the percentage of students who responded to this module survey is below 30% and/or the number of responses is below 23 it means that only a small proportion of students provided feedback and their views as shown here may not be fully representative of all students who studied the module.

See this page for the full text of questions and more information about the survey.

Faculty comment: "A new online maths skills activity has been created for registered students for the October 2017 presentation and this has been integrated with both the self-assessed maths quiz and the interactive computer-marked assignment. The self-assessed maths quiz is also available to prospective students, but for the moment, this has the maths skills activity material only as a PDF."
