This was the 3rd level 3 course I studied and the least enjoyable so far. I didn't hate it, but I struggled through it and was glad when it was finished.

This is an online course and without consistent internet access, preferably from a pc/mac, you will struggle. You can download the material as PDF or ebook, but the layout is a little clunky and links won't work as well. There is a few online tools that rely on the internet and laptop/PC based working. Old ways of studying when travelling were no longer possible.

Do not expect this to be a technical course; while some technical concepts are discussed the course heavily promotes holistic/systemic thinking, and in particular Soft Systems Methodology over specific environmental knowledge. Think Situation Management, rather than Environmental Analysis.

The use of diagrams is core to the course and mastery of these seems to be the most critical element of the course. While an ebook of the diagramming techniques from the precursor Environmental Management 1 course is provided, if you are not familiar with the standard set then you will be behind the curve. In particular I struggled with Rich Pictures, spending more time working out how to draw items than actually creating new content. I come from a technical analytic background and I felt overall that the course was a little too hippyish, and disparaging of technical focus; but perhaps this was my prior expectations.

This module packs a lot in. There was a general consensus on the forums that this takes more time than the usual 30 credit course. Be prepared to do a lot of independent research. Timing is also critical, particularly later where group work is required. There is no flexibility towards the end of this module, with the final group event having to be completed in less than 2 weeks. A TMA (based on this work) is due shortly after and then the EMA.

Marks are awarded on group involvement so do not have holiday or work stress. This heavy regular time commitment was probably the biggest downside for me.

My tutor was knowledgable, helpful and quick to respond and mark. As with any courses some are better than others, but the impression I got was that most were on the ball.

Faculty comment: "This module is in its fourth year, and we're always seeking to make changes from earlier feedback and from feedback we receive in our close liaison with students during their learning. Students will know that the module is 100% online, involves applying a systems approach, students engaging with group work, and the applied use of diagramming for problem structuring. These items can all be rather challenging. In light of this observation, we're very pleased that so many respondents enjoyed their learning experience. The sample is small, but the majority of respondents enjoyed the module and over 60% would recommend the module to others - this is an improvement on previous years and maybe reflects changes we have already made. We are confident that from October 2017, with the improvements it contains, more students will enjoy the module - this said, we are not complacent. We're attentive to our students' concerns, and we're constantly seeking to develop the module for the future."
