Student reviews

This was a really enjoyable course and I learnt a lot of new things which were really interesting.

There is a lot of work and because of the workload, it meant that most people in my study group were only able to complete the compulsory tasks and very few of the additional optional tasks. It would have been nice to have extra time to do additional reading and have additional discussions.

As this was the first course where I undertook a project, I found this very challenging initially and whilst the support is very good, it can be very daunting and challenging especially as it has to be fitted around TMAs.

There was one point where I felt that I wasn't sure that I could carry on as it was a very intense and I had started a new role at work so felt that it was very difficult to balance work/study/rest and I felt that maybe the study had to give. However, the course is designed very well so that everything is in short chunks, so as soon as I moved onto the next section, it re-inspired me and I'm really glad that I finished the course.

I would definitely recommend the course, but would warn people that you need to have adequate time to commit to the course so that you are able to get the most out of it.

B700 (or the online version BZX700 which I did) is a comprehensive management course. I'd studied for CIM qualifications in the past and found some of the course concepts familiar, however the workload, especially early on, was formidable. The last few months, where a major project is undertaken as the final tutor marked assignment(TMA),eased the pressure considerably.

The course was generally very well written, except for the finance sections where the writing style and descriptions often served to make concepts harder to understand than they needed to be. Our tutor recommended a finance text book which proved very useful.

I was surprised at the focus on TMAs in analysing your own work environment. This makes it a highly practical course which is likely to result in improved practice in your day-to-day role. That said I'm not sure how easy it would be to tackle B700 if you weren't in a work environment where you could analyse and write about your organisation in detail.

Although there is an online version of the residential school doing the BZX version still allows you to choose to attend the "real-world" version - something I would recommend. I found the 3-day residential to be essential to pulling together course concepts and found it a turning point in the course.

I went directly from BZX700 to BZX820 and didn't find it a problem. It is a little unnerving getting your first B820 TMA back around the same time as getting your B700 exam result so for some it could be stressful.

All in all B700 is an excellent course that I would recommend to anyone wishing to formalise and consolidate their management skills.

Fantastic course but like running a marathon, as you hit the last TMA your hitting the famous wall, weary from the pace you then get thrown into the exam..

My tutor was brilliant, and it set me up for the next course 820...Would advise people to seriously consider a break between B700 and B820, or choose an easier course next as you are left reeling after finishing project and doing the exam then thrown into complex strategy...Ouch...

Still excellent all round course that I use every day in my job..

This course was a great refresher as well as enhancer of my knowledge, having previously studied business at a different university. It covers the essential areas of management while at the same time emphasising the need for integrated and reflective thinking, two aspects that I am applying in my everyday management activities now with great success.

A long course which at the end makes you feel that you have completed a mini MBA. The exam at the end is relatively straight forward except section D on finance. As a qualified accountant I got a lot from the course especially the HR section and it was interesting from the tutorials to see the needs of general managers in respect of finance.

I would recommend B700 to any prospective student, interested in organizational performance, the dynamics thereof and subsequent change management.

The course content is well laid out and easy to follow, with a challenging workload at postgraduate level and a very interesting residential school. The learning exposure to the inter-linkages of the five main perspectives (relating to performance management) namely finance, people, operations, information and markets provided a basis for immediate application in my day-to-day business management activities.

I enjoyed the course thoroughly and now upon completion, can say that B700 is the driving force for continuing studying with the OUBS in pursuit of a MBA.

Most students come to enjoy the collaboration part and learn the skills of working in a virtual environment.

The adjustment from Certificate to Diploma can catch them out. Ideas and theories need to be applied to tasks given. Students who have done a Certificate or equivalent elsewhere can have difficulties adjusting as Diploma course materials assume the OU's Certificate has been studied first. So students need help and maybe extra tuition to get through the barrier.
