I loved this module, it challenged me and taught me a lot about php and javascript at the same time. I finished the module feeling as though I was able to competently develop my own, and have set about on such projects.

The course is very dated and does not teach good development practices. Most of the code is written as tangled masses of spaghetticode with no thought to structure at all. There were also bizarre issues with some code files supplied in that they had been edited using a Microsoft Word so hidden characters were present - I can't even imagine how that has happened!

It seems like the course was written in the early 2000s. You can get a much better up to date education on these subject for free online. They should really not be charging for this.

Faculty response

The October 2018 presentation suffered some minor delivery issues, these have been fixed during the presentation and have not significantly impacted the study experience.

The module materials have since been revamped and new Web/Mobile technologies have been introduced.

I found this module quite challenging but also rewarding at the same time.

There are some quite difficult areas such as figuring out how to use the HTML, CSS, and then the introduction to elements such as PHP and JavaScript but the module materials do a fairly good job of trying to explain them to you. The further you progress it is important to refer back to what you studied earlier in this module, as it does make it a lot easier to see how the different concepts develop from one another.

On hindsight I feel that I suffered when I took this module as I had overexerted myself by studying another 3 modules alongside it originally so wasn't able to put in as much time as I would have wanted to on the end-of-module assessment (EMA) or in some areas of the tutor-marked assignments (TMAs), but I achieved good results in the TMAs and the EMA which seemed to continually improve as the module went on so I am fairly confident that the module as well written and if it weren't for time constraints I would have done better.

TT284 is a great module. I particularly liked the freedom given over the end-of module assessment and even found myself enjoying the project management aspect of it as well as the product development itself.

One aspect that I found frustrating was, having worked with PHP for several years, many of the code examples supplied used rather outdated practices; some even contained errors (I recall having to fix a tutor-marked assignment question before being able to answer it). I think the course would benefit from an overhaul in this area; using object-oriented techniques, for example, would really tidy it up and add more structure. I do however appreciate that it's not specifically an OOP module.

The forums and support from my tutor were excellent and I was pleased to achieve a distinction. I would definitely recommend this module.

I really enjoyed this module. I did it alongside 'Change, strategy and projects at work' (T227). I passed both modules.

The support from the module teams was good in both cases.

When it comes to modules, you can always get what you want! But you have to invest your time!
