OUUSF Safety

Aim

The aim of this Web Site is to provide the safety information that is specific to the Standard Operating Procedures in the Open University Uranium-Series Facility (OUUSF).

This web site contains information about Risk Assessments involving hazardous substances (COSHH regulations), lasers and radioactive materials and a list of other Risk Assessments within the Department. There are also sections on general emergency procedures, alarm systems, and ‘lone working’. Generic information of the hazards associated with specific substances which is required under the COSHH regulations, is not included but can be found at suppliers websites and many other URLs.

Safety for workers

The principle aim of all safety measures and information is to ensure the safety of the workers, and it is essential and indeed a statutory requirement, that workers follow safe practices, and notify appropriate staff if they have safety concerns.

Compliance with this Safety information is mandatory for everybody in the OUUSF. This is a clear and statutory duty for all employees on the Open University payroll. OUUSF-accredited post-graduates and visitors should also comply from the start but responsibility for them remains with their supervisor or liaison person until it is agreed that they are competent. Others, including Open University and supplier's engineers, are the responsibility of the Laboratory Manager.
