Applying for a vacancy
Application Forms Unless otherwise specified, applicants for all vacancies will need to complete an application form. For some vacancies, the application form will be available on the website and may be returned either by post or email. Where this is applicable, the form will be available in the 'Apply' section of the vacancy details, along with detailed information on how to download and use the form. For all other posts, applicants will need to contact the relevant person detailed on the advertisement to obtain a form.
Information for Disabled Applicants We are eager to receive applications from suitably experienced applicants with disabilities. Included in all our vacancy advertisements are details for disabled candidates. Applicants who require a copy of the application form in large print, computer disk or on audio cassette tape are asked to advise the contact person as stated in the advertisement. Hearing impaired persons may make enquiries on Milton Keynes (01908) 654901 (minicom answer phone).
You can download our Disability Equality Scheme from our Equality and Diversity website.
Retirement Age
The Open University operates a normal retirement age of 65. It is normal policy to only accept applications from new applicants up to the age of 64 years and 6 months, provided that the applicant would be under the age of 65 when they commence work for the University. This is in line with the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006. We are reviewing policies and procedures to enable the University to abolish the compulsory retirement age in the future.
Equality and Diversity
Our mission expresses our founding aspiration to provide opportunities to all. As such, equality and diversity have been part of the core values of the Open University since its inception. We aim to be a truly inclusive organisation where individual differences are respected and valued and where everyone is able to achieve their potential. Our strategy ‘Equality and Diversity…Making it happen!’ is available to download from our website.
So we can monitor the success of our strategy, we ask job applicants to complete the Equal Opportunities Monitoring form which is attached to the application form (as a tear off slip). This provides us with information to monitor recruitment activity in relation to gender, ethnicity and disability. Please be assured that the slip is removed prior to the Selection Panel reading your application and that all information is treated in the strictest confidence.

Proof of eligibility to work in the UK
There are legal restrictions on who may undertake employment in the United Kingdom. Residents of the European Economic Area and Switzerland are permitted to work within the UK, however citizens of other countries normally need to be sponsored by a UK employer and granted permission to stay in the UK by the UK Border Agency, in order to undertake employment with the sponsoring employer.
When applying to the UK Border Agency in order to sponsor someone, the University will be required to demonstrate that the job is at skill level S/NVQ level 3 or above, and that there are no other suitable candidates for the post who are ‘settled workers’, i.e. resident in any of the countries as stated above.
Candidates who are invited for interview will be required to provide proof of their eligibility to work in the UK by producing verifiable documents. Details of the required documents will be sent to those candidates who are invited for interview and the relevant original documents must be brought along to the interview for checking and copying.
If you require sponsorship this will be processed should your application for appointment be successful. To find out what visas and permissions you may require in order to work in the UK please see the home office UK border agency website or telephone 0114 207 4074, the general enquiries line is open from 09.00 to 17.00, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
