Technology is dramatically changing educational research processes at a time of high demand for 'evidence-based' policy and practice. This course develops skills of research and evaluation in technology-rich environments. Students will engage in the critical study of original empirical research to learn about cutting edge methods of data collection and analysis. Philosophical assumptions underlying educational enquiry are examined; and associated ethical and political concerns are explored in detail. There is an opportunity to apply what's been learned by critically evaluating current research or by developing a research proposal.

The Institute of Educational Technology provides the opportunity to study for postgraduate qualifications in Online and Distance Education. Three qualifications are available: the Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and MA. The postgraduate programme is based on both the Institute's long experience of developing open and distance teaching and its highly rated research. The internationally available courses offer students the opportunity to study the theory and practice of open and distance education and to benefit from research in the Institute. The programme is designed to meet the academic and professional needs of practitioners who want to study part-time and at a distance in this significant and expanding field. It is open to applicants from many different areas of education and training who can meet the entry requirements (a first degree conferred by a UK university or other recognised degree-awarding body, or an equivalent qualification) and have access to the necessary facilities (a suitable computer and other peripheral equipment). The courses are taught and assessed through a combination of media, from traditional print to the most sophisticated computer and telecommunication technologies.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice is available to teachers and learner support professionals in higher education.
