Centre for Research in Education and Educational Technology (CREET)

The Open University is one of the UK’s leading Research Institutions. In the 2008 RAE over 50% of its research was rated as “world leading” or “internationally excellent”.
The Open University provides excellent support and offers training in computer, library and presentation skills. Students normally live in, or within commuting distance of Milton Keynes. The studentship may involve opportunities to visit and conduct research at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

Applications are invited for a fully-funded three-year studentship in the field of science communication, specifically to study the promotion of the Large Hadron Collider at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN).

Digital media have extended the number of channels that academics and media professionals use to communicate and share information. Digital technologies have the potential to make all stages of the research process more visible in the public sphere and to audiences that have, on occasion, opportunities for interaction and engagement. However, digital technologies are also introducing novel demands on academics and media professionals, requiring skills and competencies on the part of those communicating that are encapsulated by the concept of digital scholarship. It is therefore significant that, to date, there has been very little research into how the practices of digital scholarship are enacted to promote ‘big science’.
This project will explore and evaluate communication associated with the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) over a six-year period, including communication produced by media professionals and citizen scientists. It is envisaged that the research undertaken within this studentship will contribute to debates about digital scholarship, public engagement and science communication, making valuable contributions to these related fields in terms of both theory and practice.

You will have, or be expected to gain, a 2.1 or above in an undergraduate degree or Masters degree in a related subject area (e.g. science communication, media, journalism or communication studies, history, philosophy or sociology of science, or equivalent).

You are invited to make initial, informal enquiries to Richard Holliman, r.m.holliman@open.ac.uk, to discuss the breadth and scope of your proposal for this studentship. We warmly welcome all such enquiries. Final decisions about the focus of the research will be agreed between the individual appointed and the supervisors (Dr. Richard Holliman, Professor Eileen Scanlon and a contact at CERN).

Closing date: 24 February 2012.

We expect to hold interviews in Milton Keynes in March 2012.

Applicants should be available to start the studentship on or before 1 June 2012.

Equal Opportunity is University Policy.
