Virtual worlds such as Second Life, CyberTown, Twinity and There are increasingly popular environments for augmentative and immersive business, education and artistic activities as well as the leisure and entertainment activities for which they first became known.

ReLIVE08 conference, hosted by The Open University, is one of the first international conferences to bring together educators and technologists to explore the potential of such virtual world environments in relation to learning and teaching.

The conference will showcase innovative work from across the globe – highlighting the learning potential of these immersive worlds beyond gaming and social networking.

ReLIVE08 or Researching Learning in Virtual Environments – has an exciting conference programme dealing with all aspects of researching the transfer of knowledge within artificial worlds, including presentations from notable keynote speakers Edward Castranova and Roo Reynolds.

Anna Peachey, Chair of the Academic and Organising Committees for the conference said: "We are very pleased to have many of the leading academics worldwide in education in virtual worlds actively involved with this conference; it promises to be an exciting event".

ReLive08 takes place at The Open University in Milton Keynes on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st November 2008.

Attendees are also invited to attend a gala conference dinner which will include an after-dinner speech from Terry Waite CBE.

Editor’s Notes

ReLive08 is the first Researching Learning in Virtual Environments conference. It will be held at The Open University in Milton Keynes, Bucks, UK on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st November 2008.

Dr Edward Castranova is Associate Professor in the Department of Telecommunications at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA and an expert on the economies of large-scale online games.

Andrew (Roo) Reynolds, formerly a Metaverse Evangelist based at IBM’s Hursely Park laboratory in the UK, has recently joined the BBC as Portfolio Executive for Social Media.

Anna Peachey is a Teaching Fellow at the Centre for Open Learning in Math’s, Science, Computing and Technology, a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning based at The Open University. Anna is responsible for overseeing the University’s developing presence in virtual worlds.
