Professor Weller, of the OU’s Institute of Educational Technology (IET) was given the position in recognition of his contribution to the field of open education and for the work done by The Open University in general. It particularly recognises the OER Hub project, of which Professor Weller is director.

The ICDE said Professor Weller’s “extensive experience and expertise” would be welcome across the network. Professor Martin Weller commented: "I am delighted and honoured to have received this award. It is recognition of all the excellent work the Open University has done in the field of OER over the past decade, including OpenLearn, TESSA, and the OER Research Hub. I look forward to working with the other OER Chairs on advancing the work in this exciting area."

Martin Bean, Vice-Chancellor, The Open University, said: “Martin Weller is an outstanding contributor in the field of OER. His nomination for an ICDE Honorary Chair reflects admirably on his professional standing and leadership, and will further enhance the OU's reputation in the field and IET's profile.”
