The Open University has appointed Steve Hill to the post of Director of External Engagement, following an external recruitment process. The new role reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor and will oversee the OU’s Marketing Unit, Communications Unit (including Government and External Affairs), Development Office and Business Development Unit.
Mr Hill is currently the OU’s Commercial Director, and will take up his new role on 21 December 2015.
Vice-Chancellor of The Open University, Peter Horrocks, said:
“The higher education sector has undergone unprecedented change in recent years and there are no signs of this slowing down. How we respond to the challenges and opportunities ahead is vital, and Steve brings with him a strong track record of income generation, which will be central to supporting our mission in an increasingly commercial environment.”
As part of his new role, Mr Hill will work with a range of senior colleagues from across the university to address a number of priority areas. These include student employability, apprenticeships and preparing for the OU’s forthcoming 50th anniversary.
Steve Hill said:
“As a fellow student, I have seen first-hand how the OU can transform lives. Its mission today is as important as when the university was founded almost half a century ago, but there are real challenges ahead. I look forward to building on the great work the university already does to promote this mission, and ensuring we’re best-placed to deliver this for future generations of students.”
The role of Director, External Engagement, has been held on an interim basis by Fraser Woodburn, the former Secretary of The Open University, who announced his retirement earlier this year and will stand down on 17 December.
