OU Yorkshire's Disability Website Alternative Format Course Materials

Many courses offer module materials in at least one alternative format. Check the module descriptions section on the OU website for details of each module OR follow the link below to a database of alternative formats for all module. If you have questions or problems with alternative formats ask the DAR team at Yorkshire regional centre

Alternative formats include :

  • module books with a spiral comb binding
  • DAISY Digital Talking Books
  • printed transcripts of module material such as TV programmes or audio and video cassettes
  • Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files of printed module material.

This link takes you to a searchable database of alternative formats:

To request alternative formats: tick the appropriate box on the FRF1 form (from our Meeting Your Needs booklet).

The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD)(who supply alternative formats) carry out fortnightly 'sweeps' before the start of the module to identify students who have requested alternative format materials. These checks will continue every 2 weeks after the module start, for a period of 6 weeks. You will receive two copies of module materials - the alternative version and the 'normal' version. If you register for your module or request alternative formats after the module start date, you may miss out on alternative format versions of the early module material mailings, depending on what stocks OSD has left.
