DXR222 Exploring psychology: project

Residential school module

The school focuses on developing students' research skills training. Building on activities undertaken in the associated module DSE212, Exploring psychology, students participate in tutor-led preparation activities and carry out a research project of their own conception in small, closely-supervised groups. The activities and project are in the areas of memory and communication. Both topic areas cover quantitative (using SPSS) and qualitative data collection and analysis. Students undertake the preparatory activities for both topic areas but have a choice of using either qualitative or quantitative methodologies (not a mixture) in either memory or communications.

back to topRole of the residential school tutor

Your role as a tutor on DXR222 is firstly to run a number of activities designed (a) to revise and amplify theoretical and methodological aspects of the parent module, DSE212, and (b) to increase students' awareness of the process and challenges (both ethical and practical) of doing psychological research. After this preparation, you will help students to form groups, to develop a project proposal and then to co-supervise a small number of groups as they design, run, analyse and then present their research to other groups of students and tutors. Tutors work in pairs for project supervision and therefore a high level of co-tutoring skills is required. Tutors are required to be flexible about which preparation activities they lead and may be asked to co-supervise any type of project whether memory or communication, using qualitative or quantitative methodology, depending on student choices. Other sessions in which you may be asked to participate include working with students on online literature-searching skills; ethical considerations in psychological research; SPSS help sessions; and to give advice on writing the assessed report of the study conducted by the student.

You will also be encouraged to give a general lecture on an area of your own interest, professional practice or research.

Mentoring support is offered to new tutors.

back to topQualifications

You must have a good honours degree in psychology and thorough knowledge of either memory or communication research, with sufficient working knowledge in both to co-supervise projects in either area if required. You must have a thorough knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research design methodology, be willing to supervise research at this introductory level using either methodology, i.e. be familiar with observational techniques, content analysis and basic thematic analysis and have a sound knowledge of SPSS appropriate, at least, to a Level 2 undergraduate psychology module (i.e. t-tests, chi square, Cohen's Kappa, correlational statistics and one-way ANOVA). You must also have suitable teaching experience with adults and a willingness to co-supervise project work. Familiarity with online literature searching for psychology is also essential.
