This is a key role in ensuring the maintenance of high quality services to students. The Open University Business School has been awarded two Management and Business Development Fellowships by the ESRC and Society for the Advancement of Management Studies (SAMS). These research positions provide an entry pathway into an academic career in management and business studies for early to mid career individuals. Candidates must be able to demonstrate the achievement of, or potential for, excellent research skills and a wish to pursue an academic career.

We are looking for one candidate in each of following research areas:
• Third sector management; possible topics: 1) the governance of inter-organisational partnerships and 2) the role of chairs and their relationships with chief executives.
• Knowledge and innovation; possible topics: 1) social and open innovation; 2) knowledge transfer between sectors, e.g. from automotive to other sectors.

There are two types of eligible candidates for each position.

• Individuals with between five and fifteen years experience or appropriate experience of professional management practice, with the minimum of an undergraduate degree, will be eligible for a three year award during which they will be expected to register for a PhD.

The Open University is pursuing an ambitious project the €2M of funding for which has been provided by European Research Council under its second Advanced Research Grants scheme. The project is entitled ‘citizenship after orientalism’ and Professor Engin Isin will lead it in 2010-2014. We are looking for an able and motivated graduate with a social science background and project management experience.

The purpose of the project is to redefine European citizenship by developing comparative insights on citizenship understood as political subjectivity in Chinese, Islamic, Indian and Aboriginal traditions and cultures.

You will work with the Principal Investigator to supervise and manage the project team, ensure scope, timelines, resources and quality to deliver specified project outcomes, and ensure effective communications and publicity.

The Staff Payments Office is part of the University’s Finance Division and operates four UK-based payrolls and, unusually, eleven smaller payrolls located outside the UK. This is a demanding role with responsibility for paying over 12,000 staff each month – one of the largest payrolls in the University sector – and processing over 30,000 expense payments annually. The Open University offers diverse challenges in payroll with varied contract types coupled with UK and international tax regimes and pensions arrangements. There are a number of salary sacrifice schemes in place including for pension contributions and nursery vouchers.

The Staff Payments Manager manages an office of thirteen staff and is responsible for all aspects of statutory compliance within the UK and overseas. Applicants will have extensive experience in a large payroll environment with a proven record of successful project management and managing change.

Strong management and interpersonal skills are essential as the successful candidate will be required to work closely with the University’s HR and Computing Services Divisions. The ability to communicate with staff at all levels; assess the impact of new legislation and provide advice to senior members of University staff are prerequisites. Candidates will ideally have IPP membership; some knowledge of overseas based payrolls; and experience of the Delphi Millennium payroll system.

We seek to appoint two active researchers into 5 year fellowships to work on the development of imaging detectors and sensors, instrumentation and methodologies for a variety of applications ranging from space science and Earth observation to medical imaging. You will be based in the Centre for Electronic Imaging (CEI) within the Institute.

We are seeking exceptional individuals with knowledge and experience of research into imaging detectors for space instruments. One post is available to candidates who have recently completed a PhD, and the other is available to candidates who have a PhD plus postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline (e.g. physics or electronic engineering). The work will benefit from collaboration with e2v Ltd, a world-leading supplier of CCD and CMOS imagers.

You will have good team working and inter-personal skills, including a demonstrable ability to drive novel imaging detector R&D, attract grant income and produce quality published outputs. Whilst the current activities of the CEI have a strong background in space science, we would consider applications from individuals from other imaging disciplines such as synchrotron or environmental and Earth observation imaging. We would particularly welcome applications from individuals with experience of CMOS design.

This position involves the use of econometric analysis and economic theory input into grant applications and research projects and a small amount of introductory distance learning teaching. The research relates to work in new welfare economics particularly the capabilities approach and happiness and targets good mainstream economics journals such as the Journal of Public Economics and Journal of Health Economics. This is collaborative research effort based at the Open University with colleagues in Oxford/OECD etc. An interest in health and/or development would be useful but is not essential.

This position involves the development of applications to external funders of health related research. You will provide leadership to colleagues in a range of departments around the Open University and other leading institutions. The neXt Generation multimedia technology (XGMT) group at the Open University in collaboration with the Optical Information Systems group at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Berlin are offering two jointly-funded, 3-year full-time PhD studentships commencing in October 2010. The general research topics will be in multi-sensor navigation for mobile robots and 3-D medical imaging. In particular: 1) the investigation of techniques for the fast derivation of high-quality depth information from optical sensors data and subsequent 3-D mapping to facilitate up-to-date spatial environment maps; and 2) the fusion of different medical image modalities i.e. CAT and MRI to accurately estimate the orientation of the human body by observation of surfaces without access to fixed orientation points.

All applicants must either have or expect to gain a good Honours degree (at least a 2i standard or equivalent) in Information Communications Technology, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related area. Both PhD studentships will provide a stipend and cover all fees and are available to any suitably qualified UK, EU and International student.
