This course is part of a specialist programme designed for accountants in industry and commerce who want to broaden their perspectives by adding international accounting and finance knowledge and wider management skills. The course explores the international dimensions of financial reporting to stock exchanges and its regulation, and is a key specialist component within the MSc in International Finance and Management. You will examine the main accounting issues that impact on the analysis and interpretation of financial statements of multinational companies, from the perspective of International Financial Reporting Standards.
The course deals with both the infrastructure of international financial reporting and the evolution of the technical issues that are critical in preparing auditing or using consolidated financial statements of international groups. It examines briefly the context in which harmonisation and convergence have been pursued and the development of international financial reporting standards. The theory of international financial reporting is explored and illustrated though reviews of technical issues such as pension liabilities and financial instruments. It examines the constraints inherent in reporting to the international financial markets and the needs of financial analysts. The course also considers the corporate governance control frameworks, including the audit committee, statutory auditors, and compliance monitoring, as well as discussing the particularities of international taxation.
B853 can be taken as a stand-alone course for continuing professional development (CPD) purposes. As part of the Postgraduate Certificate in International Finance and Reporting (C59) it counts as CPD for a number of professional bodies.
You can take this course on its own or as part of a postgraduate qualification. It is a core course in our MSc in International Finance and Management (F39) and Postgraduate Certificate in International Finance and Reporting (C59). You will need to hold either a UK honours degree (or equivalent) or a professional accounting qualification that is equivalent to a UK honours degree. The course assumes basic accounting and financial reporting knowledge. If you are taking this course towards the MSc you should first complete the Stage 1 courses and Strategy (B820) and Financial strategy (B821) from Stage 2. You will be exempt from these courses if you have already taken them as part of your MBA or MPA studies with us as long as 60 points of study are unique to your MSc. If you have any doubt about the suitability of the course, please contact our Student Registration & Enquiry Service.
The course is available to students based outside the UK, and the financial reporting element is based on International Financial Reporting Standards and so is relevant to all EU member states, Australia, New Zealand and Russia.
