Summary

E849 is aimed at practitioners and leaders in education who want to understand leadership and how to improve their leadership skills. Designed to meet the professional development needs of teachers, middle and senior managers, and others working in educational organisations, the course will develop your understanding of current thinking on educational leadership and management, as well as your skills of critical reflection, analysis and communication. You do not need to have a specified leadership post to benefit from E849.

Course content

You’ll be using new technologies and printed materials, and receive specialist tutor support. The course assessment will enable you to apply what you learn to your own professional context. Taking E849 with its partner course Researching educational leadership and management (E859) (along with Educational enquiry (E891)) leads to a specialist MA Ed/M Ed degree in leadership and management. If you plan to take both courses, we recommend that you study E849 then E859.

The course offers guidance in planning your use of the materials in an integrated way, linking the course’s concepts and activities to your own thinking and practice. The study guide and readers enable you to explore and apply key themes:

  • The nature of educational leadership and management
  • Issues of values, ethics and educational purposes
  • The influence of changing external and internal contextual factors on educational organisations
  • Accountability, evaluation and effectiveness
  • Strategic leadership and management of change
  • Environmental analysis and links with stakeholders
  • Effective leadership and management of staff and teams.

Online group activities are an integral part of the course, closely linked to the assignments. There are three online forum activities which enable you to learn interactively, working with other students and your course tutor.

The end of course assessment (which takes the place of an examination) is a small scale leadership project that will both develop you as a leader and benefit your organisation. Students in recent years have undertaken a range of leadership projects, for example: departmental reorganisation, homework policies, key stage leadership, assessment strategies, and staff development.

A wide range of students take this course from primary phase teachers through to college lecturers, heads of department, headteachers, and more specialised educational practitioners.

Vocational relevance

National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) applicants who hold the Masters in Education (Leadership and Management) can use their prior learning in their NPQH application.

If English is not your first language, we recommend that you seek assessment under the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Please see their website for details.
