Description
Please note that this qualification is only available until December 2011. In order to claim your qualification you must have completed the required 120 credit points by this time. This qualification is not available to new students. Advanced diplomas are a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate study. This diploma is for people who have a professional interest in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. It provides a programme of study in English language and professional development.
Planning your studies
You enter the Advanced Diploma in Applied Linguistics by taking an undergraduate-level course. There are no entry requirements for that, but you must be suitably prepared for study at a level comparable to the second year of a three-year full-time bachelors degree. The usual preparation would be a Level 1 course such as The arts past and present (AA100) (or the discontinued course A103) or Introducing the social sciences (DD101) (or the discontinued course DD100).
You can register your intention to study for the diploma when you reserve your place on your Part A course, or leave it until you are ready to reserve for the Part B course. This gives you the flexibility to delay your decision or to change your mind as your studies progress.
There is no time limit for completing this diploma, but we cannot guarantee that the same courses will continue to be available.
You must include at least 40 credit points from OU courses that have not been counted in any other OU qualification you have been awarded.

Credit for previous study elsewhere
If you have already completed some successful study at higher education level at another institution we may be able to give you credit for this study that you can count towards this Open University qualification. If you make a successful claim for transferred credit it may affect your choice of courses so you are advised to investigate this option as soon as possible.

On successful completion of 120 points’ worth of required courses you will be awarded an Advanced Diploma in Applied Linguistics entitling you to use the letters Adv Dip Ed (Open) after your name.
