Description

A leading edge masters degree designed for senior HR professionals, or those aspiring to a senior HR role, who wish to develop their ability to make an effective contribution at a strategic level in today’s rapidly changing organisational contexts, internally or as an external consultant. Some of the courses in the study programme will be studied in parallel with students aiming at MBA, MPA, Finance, International Development and similar qualifications allowing contact with managers from a range of different functional specialisms.

This qualification will give you graduate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), provided the CIPD-approved courses are studied.

The OU Business School is accredited internationally by the European Foundation for Management Development, through its EQUIS programme; and by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Planning your studies

All entrants to the MSc in Human Resource Management are expected to have organisational experience, some of it at a middle level of management or above. You must have a minimum of three years’ experience in a managerial, professional or technical role. Usually this means that you are at least 25 years old.

The MSc qualification is in two stages. You must expect to successfully complete Stage 1 before you enrol on Stage 2.

Stage 1

There are three routes through Stage 1.

Route 1 – if you already have a bachelors level qualification

To follow this route, you must have at least a bachelors level qualification from a recognised university in Europe, the Commonwealth or rest of the world or the equivalent. Further details are set out under Approved Minimum Entry Requirements below. If you are eligible for this route, you can complete Stage 1 either by taking the Certificate in Business Administration course, Fundamentals of senior management (B713) or if your qualification is in the business studies area, you can study the Professional Diploma in Management course Managing performance and change (B700) (see Approved Minimum Entry Requirements below for which course you are eligible for given your qualifications). Both B713 and B700 involve 600 hours of study over 12 months.

Route 2 – if you already hold the Professional Diploma in Management or a postgraduate qualification; or have partly completed some postgraduate study.

If you have our Professional Diploma in Management (D64), you can count this as Stage 1 of the MSc.

If you have already passed any of the constituent courses of this MSc degree, probably taken as part of an MBA or MPA degree, they can also be counted towards this award. The minimum amount of new study required for this MSc is 60 points.

Alternatively, if you have a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma in human resource management, management or business administration, or a masters degree in a related area from elsewhere, or have partly completed such a degree, you can apply to transfer credit. You should do this urgently because, if your application is successful, it may mean that you can count the credit you are awarded as the MSc Stage 1 – permitting you to continue to Stage 2. Alternatively, or even in addition, it may result in some credit for Stage 2, reducing the amount of study needed at that stage. Not applying promptly may mean that you end up studying a course unnecessarily. You are advised to look at our credit transfer website.

Route 3 – if you are experienced in managerial work

If you are experienced in managerial work but not eligible for Route 1 or 2, you can take our Professional Certificate in Management (C31) prior to entering Stage 1. When you complete that certificate, you are then eligible to study our Professional Diploma in Management (D64) as Stage 1 of the MSc. The certificate followed by the diploma will take two years.

Stage 2

Your first Stage 2 course should be B827 (or the discontinued course B824). Once you have completed you are then able to continue with the rest of Stage 2, comprising The human resource professional (B855), one elective course chosen from Psychometrics: selection and assessment (D842) (currently the recommended choice if you are interested in professional recognition), Creativity, innovation and change (B822), or Managing knowledge (B823), and Making a difference (BXH830). It is possible to combine BXH830 with your last, or last two courses, to enable you to complete Stage 2 in 2 years, or even 18 months. If you do not overlap, then you are recommended to take BXH830 as your final course, and Stage 2 will take two and a half years.

If you qualify for this award on 1 January 2010 or later, then you must have passed the courses required during a period not exceeding ten years. We cannot guarantee that the same selection of courses will continue to be available throughout your study period but we are committed to providing a suitable selection at all times.

If you fail or withdraw from a course you are allowed to retake it once.

Your MSc qualification must include at least 60 credit points from OU courses that have not been counted in any other OU qualification you have been awarded.

Holders of items in the above professional qualifications list marked * may choose between courses B700 and B713 as the Stage 1 course for this masters degree. Otherwise, the choice is restricted to B713 on the grounds that you have not studied sufficient business and management at undergraduate level.

If you hold a qualification that is not on the list but that you believe is at bachelor level, you are advised to bring this to the attention of our Student Registration & Enquiry Service with full details.
