Description

This integrated masters degree course in engineering builds on recent and previous study and offers you an opportunity to fulfil the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. The MEng course aims to meet professional development needs as specified by the Engineering Council and relevant engineering institutions in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

Our MEng is accredited for Chartered Engineer status by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). A pathway through our MEng is also accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). See our engineering website for further information about the accreditation of our engineering qualifications.

Planning your studies

For this qualification you need to hold an accredited honours degree in engineering and to complete an additional 120 credits at postgraduate level. Your honours degree can be our Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (B24 or B65) or an honours degree accredited for Chartered Engineer by one of the engineering institutions licensed by the Engineering Council. Note that the B24 version of our Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is being withdrawn at the end of 2014 but can continue to count towards the MEng (M03) provided you complete M03 by 2018. You may also count a degree with appropriate accreditation awarded in one of the countries that are signatories of the Washington Accord. Your honours degree will contribute 360 credits towards the 480 credits required for the qualification.

If you have completed our Bachelor of Engineering please contact the Qualifications and Ceremonies Centre on +44 (0)1908 653003 or by email to let them know that you want to study for the MEng.

If you have a non-OU qualification you will need to complete Towards chartership: professional development for engineers (T398) which may be studied alongside other modules. This module is a mandatory component for non-OU graduates because it covers personal career development planning and key skills specifically in an engineering context. T398 will enable you to plan for coherent progression from your honours degree to your MEng.

If you do not hold a qualification from The Open University you will first need to contact the Mathematics, Computing and Technology Faculty. You will be required to provide documentary evidence of your honours degree that shows the date of qualification. In addition you will need to provide evidence that this has been accredited by one of the licensed bodies of the Engineering Council. You can check that your degree has this accreditation by visiting the Engineering Council website.

In all cases you must complete your postgraduate MEng studies within 4 years of the date your honours degree was awarded. If you are overlapping your studies for the BEng (Hons) and the MEng qualifications, please email the Qualifications and Ceremonies Centre for clarification of the date by which you will need to complete your studies towards the MEng.

If you are unable to complete your MEng studies within this time, there is instead our Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (E22), which has no time limit for completion. If you would like further advice and guidance, please visit the engineering website or email us.

Modules can count towards this degree for a maximum of ten years after we have stopped presenting them – please see individual module descriptions for presentation plans. Team engineering (T885), the group project module which includes a compulsory residential element, must be the last module you take for this qualification and you must have completed all your previous modules before you can register for T885.

You should note that the University’s unique study rule applies to this qualification. This means that all 120 postgraduate credits must be new study: no postgraduate module undertaken previously and counted towards another qualification can be counted towards this qualification.
