This course will help you recognise the causes and sources of conflict and give you skills to help you deal with the situation. What you will study

This online continuing professional development course explores conflict in the workplace – how and why it occurs – and then offers ways of managing and resolving it. Understanding why conflicts arise and being able to deal with them makes good business sense.

You will learn to:

  • describe the nature and dynamics of conflict in the workplace
  • identify signs and symptoms of a conflict
  • understand that how one responds to conflict helps to determine whether the outcome is positive or negative
  • identify situations and the behaviour of others that may trigger a conflict response from you
  • recognise five styles of conflict management and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each style
  • understand the impact of conflict on an organisation, both the financial and human costs
  • understand the options within an organisation for managing conflict
  • understand key skills required in managing conflict effectively and be able to apply these to a conflict situation.

In this course there are activities that you can use to help you relate your learning to your workplace and your role within it. These should help you to assemble the basic understanding necessary for the final part of the work-based activity (WBA), which is to produce a case study of a conflict that will help you to demonstrate your understanding of the study material and maximise your effectiveness in the workplace.

The course will take 30 hours to study and includes Web text, self-assessment questions and activities. Computing requirements
