When do I apply?

Please note the application period for 2013 entry has now closed, but you can submit an application between August and November 2013 for entry in May 2014.

Am I eligible?

We receive over 100 applications each year and competition for places is high, so before you apply you should make sure you meet the entry requirements for the programme.  Try our Eligibility tool, and have a look at our Application FAQs page if you are not sure whether you are eligible to apply.

When you have answered the questions in the Eligibility Tool, you will receive a message confirming if you are eligible to apply to the programme. If you are eligible, you will be able to download an application form and proposal pack. If you are not eligible, you will be given information explaining what further qualifications you need in order to apply to the programme.

What do I send?

You will need to send a completed EdD application form and a research proposal to RD-applications-EdD@open.ac.uk.

If you are applying on the basis of a Masters degree in Education from another UK university, you must provide detailed information about your previous studies together with your application form:

    • Outline the content of the research methods modules for your Masters degree and whether your study included both qualitative and quantitative research methods
    • Provide detailed information about the content of the research methods modules, the hours of study involved and their credit ratings
    • If you don’t hold a Masters degree in Education or a related discipline, you should also provide detailed information about the educational content of your Masters degree, relevant to the area you wish to research.

A research proposal will be required so it’s a good idea to start thinking about your research topic now.

What happens next?

Your application and proposal will be assessed at the Centre for Research in Education and Educational Technology (CREET) by a selection panel who will judge whether the research would make a significant contribution to educational knowledge, and whether there is a supervisor available with experience relevant to the project.

We will contact you in April to let you know if your application has been successful, and if so, we will send you details of how to register in May.
