The Department of Politics & International Studies (POLIS) has an international reputation for research in the areas of comparative politics, British politics, environmental politics, normative political theory, citizenship studies, security studies and international political economy. POLIS’s main research groupings are constituted around two broad areas: first, the politics of global, regional and national governance and second, challenging contemporary political ideas. Many POLIS academics are active in the OU’s Centre for Citizenship, Identities and Governance (CCIG), which brings together researchers from across the social sciences to stimulate interdisciplinary innovation.
Key facts
- In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the POLIS department was assessed as part of the OU’s interdisciplinary social science submission. Of the 43 research active staff submitted, eight were POLIS staff. Of research outputs submitted to the RAE, 55 per cent were of quality judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
- POLIS researchers are leading a three-year (2008-2011) Framework Seven Project in Social Sciences and Humanities on European citizenship (ENACT).
- Currently, POLIS PhD students conduct research ranging from European citizenship, social citizenship, digital citizenship and security studies to migration and democratization.
- POLIS researchers are either editors or board members of international journals such as Citizenship Studies, International Political Sociology, Soundings, Economy and Society, Socialist History, Security Dialogue, Democratization, Perspectives on European Politics and Societies, Contemporary Political Theory, Contemporary Politics, and Globalizations.
- POLIS researchers have recently contributed more than 200 (and growing) publications to the OU’s open access Online Research Repository (see below).
