B690 is a ten-credit Level 3 course that consolidates key learning points from earlier functional-based study of management to allow you to convert previous relevant study to the Professional Certificate in Management (C31). You will work together supported by a facilitator to integrate different management functional perspectives, practice key management techniques and skills, and develop and examine the ability to understand and tackle complex management problems. Satisfactory participation at a compulsory 2.5 day residential school or an eighteen-day online equivalent is required. Assessment will be a three hour examination using a pre-issued case study.

What you will study

B690 has three aims:

  • to integrate organisational, people, customer and financial based perspectives of the managerial role
  • to practice key management skills and techniques with others
  • to develop and examine the ability to understand and tackle complex and integrated management problems.

The overall shape of the course is as follows:

Part (A) preparation (months 1 - 4)

A range of individual study and online activities aimed at consolidating previous learning, integration of concepts and preparation for the later parts of study.

Part (B) residential school or Online equivalent (early - mid month 5)

A residential or online school focusing on the integration of management disciplines and problem-based decision-making.

Part (C) revision (months 5 - 6)

Post-school review and reflective activities, followed by revision and examination preparation using a pre-issued case study.

Part (D) examination (month 6)

A three-hour exam based on the pre-issued case.

Further information about the certificate to which this course contributes can be found in the Professional Certificate in Management Information and sample study material.

You will learn

The specific learning outcomes for students studying B690 are to:

  • consolidate key learning points from earlier functional-based study of management, e.g. Managing 1: organisations and people B628/BZX628 and Managing 2: marketing and finance B629/BZX629
  • integrate the different functional views of management
  • apply managerial problem-solving approaches to ‘holistic’ work situations
  • share and to learn how to critique different problem solutions and different approaches to problem solving
  • further develop interpersonal and other skills that require interactive learning.

Vocational relevance

B690 is the final course taken by students to obtain the Professional Certificate in Management and thereby gain entry to the Professional Diploma in Management course and the rest of the masters programmes in business and management. This course helps to consolidate what has been learned throughout the study of the certificate courses (or other prior learning) and to apply this learning to your workplace.

Residential school

The residential school is a key component of the course and offers you an opportunity to work together and prepare and practice for the examination. Satisfactory participation at a residential or online school is required if you want to gain credit for this course. The cost of the residential or online school is included in the course fee. See our Residential Schools website for more information.

If you have a disability or additional requirement

As a large proportion of the study material is delivered through the B690 website, you will spend significant time working online. If you use specialist hardware or software to assist you in operating a computer or the internet and have any concerns about accessing the materials, you are advised to contact the Open University before enrolling about available support.

Written transcripts of any audio components and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) versions of printed material are available. Some Adobe PDF components may not be available or fully accessible using a screen reader.

Satisfactory participation at a residential or online school is required if you want to gain credit for this course. The Open University is able to offer a variety of support to students with disabilities or additional requirements to ensure they can participate at a residential school. Details of the range of services and how to request them are in the publication Meeting your residential school needs. It may not be possible for some students to attend the residential school, so an online school is available as an alternative.

If you are a new student, or new to study using a computer or the internet, you will need to inform us of your particular needs as soon as possible, as some of our support services may take several weeks to arrange. Details of how to do this and our range of support services are described in our publications Meeting Your Needs and Meeting your residential school needs.

You can also find information about accessible study materials, financial support and the Disabled Students' Allowance, equipment and other services, on our Services for disabled students website. It also includes our contact details for advice and support both before you register and while you are studying.
