B690 is a ten-credit Level 3 course that consolidates key learning points from earlier functional-based study of management to allow you to convert previous relevant study to the Professional Certificate in Management (C31). You will work together supported by a facilitator to integrate different management functional perspectives, practice key management techniques and skills, and develop and examine the ability to understand and tackle complex management problems. Satisfactory participation at a compulsory 2.5 day residential school or an eighteen-day online equivalent is required. Assessment will be a three hour examination using a pre-issued case study.

B690 has three aims:
The overall shape of the course is as follows:
Part (A) preparation (months 1 - 4)
A range of individual study and online activities aimed at consolidating previous learning, integration of concepts and preparation for the later parts of study.
Part (B) residential school or Online equivalent (early - mid month 5)
A residential or online school focusing on the integration of management disciplines and problem-based decision-making.
Part (C) revision (months 5 - 6)
Post-school review and reflective activities, followed by revision and examination preparation using a pre-issued case study.
Part (D) examination (month 6)
A three-hour exam based on the pre-issued case.

The specific learning outcomes for students studying B690 are to:
B690 is the final course taken by students to obtain the Professional Certificate in Management and thereby gain entry to the Professional Diploma in Management course and the rest of the masters programmes in business and management. This course helps to consolidate what has been learned throughout the study of the certificate courses (or other prior learning) and to apply this learning to your workplace.
The residential school is a key component of the course and offers you an opportunity to work together and prepare and practice for the examination. Satisfactory participation at a residential or online school is required if you want to gain credit for this course. The cost of the residential or online school is included in the course fee. This course has been designed for those who have successfully studied or are studying the two 30-credit courses B628/BZX628 and B629/BZX629 in order to achieve the Professional Certificate in Management (C31) (If you take and pass this course without successfully completing the other course components of C31 you will be awarded a pass mark and ten credits but not the Professional Certificate in Management). This course has been designed to run alongside B629/BZX629.

If you are taking this course as part of the Professional Certificate in Management (C31), you should have already studied, or be studying, the two main courses comprising the Certificate.
As a large proportion of the study material is delivered through the B690 website, you will spend significant time working online. If you use specialist hardware or software to assist you in operating a computer or the internet and have any concerns about accessing the materials, you are advised to contact the Open University before enrolling about available support.

Satisfactory participation at a residential or online school is required if you want to gain credit for this course. This course includes online computer activities – you can access these using a web browser that can play Flash and Shockwave.
You will need internet access and a computer. If you have purchased a new computer since 2005 it should meet your course computing requirements. Check our Technical Requirements section if your computer is older than this or is otherwise unusual.
At key points in the course there will be an online forum facilitated by one or more moderators who will help to prepare you for the residential or online school and guide you through the process of addressing problem-based questions similar to those you will come across in the examination. In addition, you will be supported by a tutor while taking part in the residential or online school.
