This course is designed for experienced healthcare support workers who are seeking accreditation of their prior learning based on previous caring experiences. You will demonstrate how your experience and knowledge of caring contributes to achievement of the learning outcomes. These are a requirement for students of nursing to achieve prior to consideration for entry to the branch of the pre-registration nursing programme (Nursing and Midwifery Council (2004)). You will prepare an action plan, identifying any additional learning needs that you will need to meet. Working independently with some support from your tutor you will provide a portfolio of evidence that you have achieved the learning outcomes.
See fees and funding options for study from September 2012.

KZL107 provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate evidence of achievement of NMC Essential Skills Clusters as well as the core practice experiences for adult; child; mental health; learning disabilities; primary/community care; acute patient care and continuing care/rehabilitation.
You will be required to submit verified evidence that you have completed 750 hours of healthcare related experiences – for example – working in a healthcare setting, caring for a family member or experiencing pregnancy. For such experiences to contribute to your required 750 practice hours you will need to write an account of what you have learned from your experiences and how they inform your healthcare practice. Some of this experience may be achieved as you prepare your portfolio but as the emphasis for KZL107 is on prior learning, it is expected that you will, for the most part, be drawing on your prior experience.
KZL107 promotes reflection on experience as a major resource for your learning. The evidence you select to provide in your portfolio will need to demonstrate person-centred care, anti-discriminatory practice, approaches to diversity and change and interprofessional working. You will be encouraged to adopt a questioning, investigative approach that draws appropriately on evidence-based practice.
The completion of KZL107 and K101 (or the discontinued K(ZX)100) leads to the Certificate of Higher Education in Healthcare Practice.
If you apply to a pre-registration nursing programme, this certificate may be accepted as equivalent to the Common Foundation Programme (CFP). You should note however that completion of KZL107 does not guarantee automatic entry to The OU Pre-registration Nursing Programme or to any other universities’ provision. If you wish to apply to the OU Pre-registration Nursing Programme (Adult or Mental Health) you must be sponsored by your employer and you must meet the entry requirements for pre-registration nurse education set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The OU Pre-registration Nursing Programme has been approved for presentation in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the States of Jersey.
You will need to be working as a healthcare support worker in a health setting to complete KZL107. You will need support from your line manager who must provide you with access to a registered nurse. The registered nurse must be available to assist you in:
The registered nurse will verify the authenticity of the evidence you provide in your portfolio to demonstrate that you have met the requirements.
If you have any doubt about the suitability of the course, please contact our Student Registration & Enquiry Service. You should discuss your intended study pathway with your employer before you register for KZL107.
You will receive guidance on how to get started online in your first mailing. This will provide you with information on using your computer for OU study as well as guidance on how to access and use the website and online discussion forums which are provided to support you in completing KZL107. You can work through this and explore all the online services available to you.
Written transcripts of any audio components and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) versions of printed material are available. Some Adobe PDF components may not be available or fully accessible using a screen reader and musical notation and mathematical, scientific, and foreign language materials may be particularly difficult to read in this way. Other alternative formats of the KZL107 materials may be available in the future. Our Services for disabled students website has the latest information about availability.
If you are a new student, or new to courses using a computer or the internet, you will need to inform us of your particular needs as soon as possible, as some of our support services may take several weeks to arrange. Details of how to do this and our range of support services are described in our publication Meeting Your Needs.
You can also find information about accessible study materials, financial support and the Disabled Students' Allowance, equipment and other services, on our Services for disabled students website. It also includes our contact details for advice and support both before you register and while you are studying.
A Student Learning Guide, Assessment Guide, Profile of Practice Skills, templates for your portfolio and an electronic study calendar will be provided. You will have access to the KZL107 website through which peer and tutor support as well as library resources are available.
A binder for your Portfolio.
This course includes online computer activities – you can access these using a web browser that can play Flash and Shockwave.
You will need internet access and a computer. If you have purchased a new computer since 2005 it should meet your course computing requirements. Check our Technical Requirements section if your computer is older than this or is otherwise unusual.
You will have a tutor whom you can ask for advice and guidance with the study materials. They will also mark and comment on your written work. If you are new to the OU, you will find that your tutor is particularly concerned to help you with your study methods. Contact with your tutor will be through telephone, email and the online discussion forums. Your tutor will make contact with you soon after the start of the course, to help you get started and to ensure that you have received the materials. However, as this is a self-directed learning module you will be expected to work independently for much of the work that you have to do in completing your Portfolio.
Contact our Student Registration & Enquiry Service if you want to know more about study with The Open University before you register.
The assessment details for this course can be found in the facts box above.
KZL107 is examined in part through two compulsory formative tutor-marked assignments (TMAs), submitted on paper. You will additionally develop a portfolio as your end-of-module assignment (EMA) to demonstrate your achievement of the outcomes that are specified by the NMC (2004), in its standards for proficiency for pre-registration nurse education. These standards identify four domains: Professional and Ethical Practice; Care Delivery; Care Management; and Personal and Professional Development.
This is one of a set of courses that together constitute an approved programme that leads to the professional qualification of Registered Nurse (Part 1: NMC). This course will be mapped against the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework.
