Environmental decision making addresses everyday concerns of environmental protection, natural resource management and waste disposal, along with rapidly changing environmental legislation and policy. If you already hold a UK undergraduate degree (or the equivalent), and you are ready for postgraduate study in this field, see our postgraduate level pages.

However, if you don’t hold an undergraduate degree, you can work towards an Advanced Diploma in Environmental Decision Making, a postgraduate qualification made up of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Your starting point for the advanced diploma will depend on how much experience you already have in this area, and how much experience you have of university-level education. If you’re already suitably prepared to study at a level equivalent to second year of a three-year, full-time degree, then you could embark on the advanced diploma straightaway, starting with a choice from a specified range of Level 2 and 3 undergraduate courses. However, if you’re new to university-level education, you could take one of the Level 1 courses listed in the ‘Where to start’ section below, which would  equip you with the background and study skills you’d need in order to go on to the Advanced Diploma.

For more information about the Advanced Diploma see our postgraduate level pages.

Alternatively, another route into postgraduate study in environmental decision making would be to do an entire undergraduate degree, and then move into this specialist postgraduate area. If this appeals to you, look at our Environmental Science pages, or the Environmental Studies pages, which list the qualifications you could get in this area, and will give you advice about where to start.

Where to start in Environmental Decision Making

If you are new to university-level study, we advise that you start with one of the Level 1 undergraduate courses listed below as preparation for starting on the Advanced Diploma in Environmental Decision Making. (Alternatively, if you are ready to start the undergraduate part of your studies for the advanced diploma, see the Advanced Diploma in Environmental Decision Making for advice about which courses you can start with.) The recommended Level 1 introductory courses are:

Don't forget that if you need help considering options you can talk to an adviser. And if you have some previous study experience you may qualify for credit transfer.
