Do you want to communicate in another language? Gain an insight into French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese or Welsh-speaking cultures? Maybe you regret not having pursued language studies at school? Or perhaps language skills will get you the job of your dreams?
Learning a modern language is enjoyable and rewarding. It can be your passport to a new career and perhaps a new life abroad. We offer courses in French, German and Spanish, along with beginners’ courses in Italian, Chinese and Welsh.
Whether you’re a complete beginner, want to brush up existing skills, or are looking for a degree or professional language qualification, we can provide a flexible, step-by-step way of achieving your learning goals. You’ll develop proficiency in all four skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening. Some of our language courses even offer a week at a residential school in a country where the language is spoken.
We also offer a number of courses about how the English language works. Using examples from English around the world you could learn about language history and how language changes and develops in response to different cultural, social, technological and geographical contexts. Whether you just want to study the history and variety of English around the world, investigate how grammar works to create different meanings, or explore the creativity within a variety of texts, English language studies courses will surprise and challenge you.
If you're fairly confident about studying, then start with Level 1 courses. You'll learn how to study at university level, get a thorough grounding in your chosen area of study and, in addition, you'll become a confident distance learner.
Don't forget that if you need help considering options you can talk to an adviser. And if you have some previous study experience you may qualify for credit transfer.

According to CILT, the National Centre for Languages, knowing foreign languages opens the door to a wide range of economic, social and personal benefits. In this increasingly globalised economy, UK businesses can no longer afford to rely on English as the international lingua franca. Being able to communicate effectively with our customers, colleagues and business partners is critical to competitiveness and social cohesion.
