An image to illustrate studying law with The Open University

Law is a fascinating subject, with a great tradition and a dynamic future. It’s a foundation stone of society and plays an increasingly important and visible role in virtually all areas of modern life. Social and environmental responsibilities, business operations and international codes of conduct are all determined and upheld by legal systems.

Where to start in Law

If you are just getting started in undergraduate law we recommend starting with either of our Level 1 courses listed below;

Worried about your ability? Or the time it will take? If you're a UK resident you can start with one of our Openings courses: short courses with lots of support and no exams, giving you a gradual introduction to your subject and the world of studying.

Don't forget that if you need help considering options you can talk to an adviser. And if you have some previous study experience you may qualify for credit transfer.

  • Bachelor of Laws (Honours)

Spotlight on Law

A career change to law

Got a degree already, and thinking of a career change? As a graduate you could claim up to 120 credit points from your previous degree, needing to complete just four compulsory law courses. You could do a course a year for four years, and collect the Diploma in English law (E06) on the way to your Law degree (LLB) (B05), which would then count as a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD).

An alternative to 'traditional' university

You could avoid large debts by staying at home to study law full time with the Open University, and doing 120 points a year for three years. You could graduate with a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) at the same time as friends who’ve gone away to university, and go straight onto the vocational stage of your legal training without the burden of debt.

A fresh start in law

No qualifications at all, but thinking of improving your job prospects? You could study a law course (60 points) each year for six years, picking up a Certificate in Legal Studies (C77) and a Diploma in English Law  (E06) on the way. If you graduate within six years of starting your studies your law degree could constitute a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD), and it’ll clearly demonstrate your independence, determination and commitment.
