Planning your studies

This contains Level 2 courses, and you are encouraged to study for it only after you have successfully completed several Level 1 science courses. Useful courses to have studied prior to this certificate include Exploring science (S104) (or the discontinued course S103), and Practising science (SXR103), or one of the science short courses S194, S196, S197 and S198.

You may find it useful to study Observing the Universe (SXR208) (a 15-point residential school course) alongside one or other of the courses for this certificate, although SXR208 does not count towards the certificate.

You can treat this certificate as a milestone on the way towards one of our degrees – BSc (Honours) Physical Science (B27), BSc (Honours) Geosciences (B25) or BSc (Honours) Natural Sciences (B16) – but be aware that S282 would have to be counted as part of the allowable free-choice element in the case of the Geosciences degree. Contact our Student Registration & Enquiry Service for further advice.

There is no time limit for obtaining the required credit points for this qualification unless you are including discontinued courses which may cease to be countable at some point after their final presentation. You must include at least 20 points from OU or collaborative scheme courses that have not been counted in any other OU certificate, diploma or first degree you may have been awarded.
