Planning your studies

This is a certificate comprising Level 2 courses and you are encouraged to study it only after you have successfully completed the appropriate Level 1 courses, or have obtained the equivalent knowledge elsewhere. Useful courses to study prior to this certificate include Exploring science (S104), Maths for science (S151) and Using mathematics (MST121). For more information on the background and experience you need before studying for this certificate, you should look at the S207 and SXR207 course descriptions. Contact our Student Registration & Enquiry Service for further advice.

There is no time limit for obtaining the required credit points for this qualification unless you are including discontinued courses which may cease to be countable at some point after their final presentation. You must include at least 20 points from OU or collaborative scheme courses that have not been counted in any other OU certificate, diploma or first degree you may have been awarded.

Career relevance and employability

This would be useful, for example, if you are required to teach secondary school physics but your background is in another area of science. This certificate is endorsed by the Institute of Physics as providing sufficient content to support the teaching of secondary school physics to A-level. It is also endorsed by the Institute as providing sufficient content for those seeking to be physics specialists on entry to PGCE studies.
