If you have any questions about your eligibility for this qualification please contact the Qualifications and Ceremonies Centre on +44(0) 1908 653003 or by email .

Many people have obtained a first degree and wish to study for an accredited qualification in psychology. The OU Diploma in Psychology is an accredited conversion route that is particularly suited to graduates who wish to specialise in psychology, or undertake a career in which psychology is a major component.

This diploma then is for people who already have a degree (Ordinary, Honours, Masters or an overseas equivalent) but have not yet studied enough psychology to entitle them to the British Psychological Society (BPS) Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC).

For more information, you can download Recognition leaflet 3.1 British Psychological Society, or ask our Student Registration & Enquiry Service for a copy.

Planning your studies

You must have a UK degree or a recognised non-UK equivalent. You enter for the Diploma by contacting the Psychology Awards Co-ordinator, The Open University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Walton Hall, Milton Keynes MK7 6AA for an application pack, which must be completed and submitted between 1 March and 31 July 2010. The nature and content of your previous qualification will be assessed and you will be told which courses you need to take to reach GBC standard.

If you have taken no psychology in your previous degree, you must first successfully complete the following courses before you may be formally accepted onto the Diploma qualification.

Level 2

Exploring psychology (DSE212) or the discontinued course DSE202

Exploring psychology project (DXR222) or online version DZX222*

If you have already completed an introductory course in psychology that is equivalent to six months of study at degree level, you may be exempted from the requirement to complete DSE212 and either DXR222 or DZX222. In order to qualify though, any previous study of introductory level psychology must have been completed within ten years of registering on the Diploma.

* These courses are equivalent to the residential school which was previously a component in DSE202. If you have already completed DSE202 with the residential school, you may not need to take either of these courses.

If you have already used one or more of the compulsory courses towards another qualification, please contact the Psychology Awards Co-ordinator (01908 654514 or 01908 655668) for further advice.

There is a time limit for obtaining the required credit points for this qualification, see above. The core courses listed below can be counted towards this diploma for a maximum of ten years after we have stopped presenting them. Please see the course descriptions for full information about future availability.
