Description

This diploma is for those who want a qualification in French, either in its own right or as an interim qualification towards a BA (Honours) Modern Language Studies (B30) degree, or any other degree that includes French language courses (the University does not offer single language degrees). It enables you to learn how to communicate effectively in French, both in speech and writing.

When you complete the diploma you will also have learnt something about the societies and cultures in which French is used. The diploma in French will provide you with opportunities to explore and develop your cognitive skills, to become an independent learner and to develop other transferable skills and attributes.

Planning your studies

The Diploma in French is made up of Level 2 and Level 3 courses taken from our undergraduate programme. There are no entry requirements but you need a good knowledge of the subject area, obtained either from Level 1 study with the OU or from equivalent work at another university. The normal preparation would be the Level 1 course Ouverture: intermediate French (L120).

You can register your intention to study for the diploma when you reserve your place on individual courses, or you can ask us at any time to link courses that you have already studied towards the diploma. This gives you the flexibility to delay your decision or to change your mind as your studies progress. There is no time limit for obtaining the required credit points for this qualification. You must include at least 40 points from OU courses that have not been counted in an OU diploma or other first degree you have been awarded.
