Planning your studies

The Diploma in Statistics is made up of Level 2 and Level 3 courses taken from our undergraduate programme. There are no entry requirements but you must be suitably prepared for study at that level. The normal preparation would be one of the Level 1 courses Discovering mathematics (MU123) or Using mathematics (MST121). Our Maths Choices website can give you useful information on where to start your studies.

We recommend you start your studies for this diploma with Analysing data (M248). The course Practical modern statistics (M249) should be studied after M248, but it is not a prerequisite for the Level 3 courses in the diploma and could be taken either before or after them. Note that Applications of probability (M343) assumes a level of mathematical knowledge beyond that normally provided by MU123 or MST121. You can find out more information about studying statistics from the Stats Choices website

You can register your intention to study for the diploma when you reserve your place on individual courses, or you can ask us at any time to link courses that you have already studied towards the diploma. This gives you the flexibility to delay your decision or to change your mind as your studies progress. There is no time limit for obtaining the required credit points for this qualification. You must include at least 40 points from OU courses that have not been counted in an OU diploma or other first degree you have been awarded.

Courses

For this diploma you require:

120 points from the following compulsory courses:

Level 2 compulsory courses Points Next start
Analysing data (M248)

Gain an understanding of statistics, and learn to make use of basic statistical concepts on this introductory course. You’ll need a good grounding in mathematics.

30 Feb 2011
Practical modern statistics (M249)

This course introduces medical statistics, time series analysis, multivariate data analysis, and Bayesian statistics - broadening your perspective on practical modern statistics.

30 Feb 2011
Level 3 compulsory courses Points Next start
Applications of probability (M343)

Discover how models can describe the occurrences of events - from a gambler’s ruin or the positions of plants, to the spread of an epidemic.

30 Feb 2011
Linear statistical modelling (M346)

Explore situations where a response variable depends on explanatory variables – such as how different strains of wheat compare when grown in various conditions.

30 Feb 2011

Or, subject to the rules about excluded combinations, at Level 2 the discontinued courses M246, BM240, at Level 3 the discontinued course M345
