Educational aims

This certificate is awarded for successful completion of six 10-credit Level 1 modules. It aims to encourage a broad interest in science through the study of a range of science topics, and to develop your skills as an independent learner.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

When you have completed this award you will be able to demonstrate:

  • general knowledge and understanding of some of the basic facts, concepts and principles relating to a range of science topics
  • your understanding of terminology and nomenclature relating to a range of science topics.

Cognitive skills

Completion of this award will enable you to:

  • apply your knowledge and understanding to familiar and unfamiliar situations
  • interpret scientific data and evaluate information in the light of existing scientific understanding
  • be able to express module concepts in an objective and factually correct way.

Practical and/or professional skills

Key skills

Completion of this award will enable you to:

  • receive and respond to a variety of information sources, including textual, numerical, graphical, audio-visual material
  • draw together information from different sources and make logical deductions
  • communicate information about a particular scientific topic clearly and correctly, using a structured argument.

Teaching, learning and assessment methods

Knowledge and understanding are acquired from teaching materials which include specially prepared teaching texts, audio-visual material, and computer-aided learning (CAL) packages. The teaching materials use a variety of learning approaches including self-assessment and in-text questions.

You will work independently with the teaching materials, but are encouraged to discuss your learning with other students, communicating by online forums. Study Advisers will support your learning on the telephone and via online forums.

Students taking SXR103 as part of the certificate will also have tutorials and face-to-face tutor support at the week-long residential school.
