What you will study
There are two ways to start a qualification. You can begin your studies at Stage 1, or, if you haven’t studied for a long time, you can get started by studying an Access module as an additional preparatory stage of your chosen qualification. We know from experience that students who have completed an Access module do better in their subsequent modules, so it could be the vital first step you take to help you succeed in your future studies.

At Stage 1, you’ll learn about two potentially conflicting goals in youth justice: supporting children and young people who are ‘in trouble’ while, at the same time, addressing their troublesome behaviour.
Foundations for effective practice in youth justice (K115) (60 credits) you’ll learn about the youth justice system in England and Wales and explore how to prevent children and young people from offending and re-offending. undergraduate.qualification.pathways.Q63-1,module,K115,,1
Working with children and young people in trouble (K116) (60 credits), you’ll explore, in practice situations, how to balance the care needs of children and young people who offend with the need to control their behaviour. You’ll learn how to develop supportive and respectful relationships with children, young people and their families, as the basis for effective practice in youth justice. undergraduate.qualification.pathways.Q63-1,module,K116,,1
On completing Stage 1 you will understand the importance of appropriate interventions to support the victims of crime, and how to promote the safety and security of children and young people.
Stage 2 develops the knowledge and skills you acquired in Stage 1, focusing on the overarching principles and understanding needed to be an effective practitioner in this field. You’ll learn about comparative youth justice and explore the relationship between theory and research, and how they impact on practice, in the module
Youth justice: theory, research and practice (K209) (60 credits). This will build your underpinning knowledge of issues like the assessment of young people and intervention design. undergraduate.qualification.pathways.Q63-1,module,K209,,1
This stage also comprises
Effective practice in youth justice (K208) (60 credits) where you will be learning in practice, helping you compare and critically assess the appropriateness of different approaches to preventing offending and re-offending. You’ll examine the principles of evidence-based practice, and gain insight into how they should be applied to youth justice. undergraduate.qualification.pathways.Q63-1,module,K208,,1
The teaching materials for Stages 1 and 2 were developed in collaboration with the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales (YJB), and will equip youth justice workers and volunteers with the knowledge and skills to further their careers in the youth justice system. They include discrete qualifications recognised by the YJB and endorsed by Skillsmark.
By the time you’ve successfully reached Stage 3, you’ll have acquired a range of study skills and have substantial knowledge of youth justice. You’ll focus on how research can deepen your knowledge and broaden your critical analysis of youth justice. A distinct feature of this stage is that not only will you be encouraged to draw lessons from existing research, you will also learn to prepare and conduct your own.
Issues in research with children and young people (EK313), you will cover research in the fields of education, social science, health and social care. You’ll be introduced to a range of research methods and analytical techniques, alerting you to important issues specific to research with children and young people and providing opportunities to practise particular research skills. undergraduate.qualification.pathways.Q63-1,module,EK313,,1
Exploring practice (K316) (60 credits) you’ll also learn to apply research techniques to a project theme based in your own practice. This unique research opportunity promotes development of personal and professional learning in evidence-based practice, and culminates in detailed action planning.
